In the latest episode of our podcast, We Make The Future, we explore physical movement and embodied learning (listen here).
Alison Swann runs Dance Educates, which works with schools to build movement and creative problem solving into the learning experience. She tells us how learning physically, leads to children developing a deeper understanding of a subject.
We begin by hearing how in these straitened times, the arts despite being the A in STEAM, are often the first thing to get cut from any school programme. And with dance being perceived as the poor sister of the arts, it's this that often gets to go first.
We then move on to how movement and embodied learning works in the classroom, exploring topics such as Ancient Greece. Alison sums up clearly the benefits to both staff and students of a movement-led workshop, and how it plays to children's strengths, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding through physicality using their own bodies.
